3 PASCHAL, fully compatible formwork systems are helping to close a gap in vocational education and training.The vocational school in Bad Krozingen is taking shape with the LOGO.3, TTR Trapezoidal girder circular formwork and circular column formwork systems working together to speed up construction work.
Building, construction and materials concept
While the new building is to fit in with the town's existing architecture, it also needs to represent the vocational school's individuality. The new structure, with maximum external dimensions of 81.50 x 22.70 m, is being erected parallel to the county grammar school and, according to its designers, meets the required urban development integration.
Structural details and the materials employed are being used to deliver integration and demarcation. The grammar school has a graceful, sharp look while the vocational school uses soft curves both inside and outside to symbolise a forward-looking educational approach.
The building is designed as a conventional reinforced concrete structure divided along 18 longitudinal axes and 5 transverse axes from A to E.
Load bearing is via columns, wall bulkheads, parapets and slabs. The longitudinal and transverse reinforced concrete walls provide stiffening. The 3-storey new building with a basement has 2 stairwells and a lift.
The foundation comprises strips foundations and pad footings. Since the basement crosses into the groundwater, it was constructed in waterproof concrete as a waterproof concrete tanking.
The closed façade areas are designed as back-ventilated façades with 16 cm deep insulation of the reinforced concrete sections. The classrooms, with their window bands, are constructed as element windows, fitted with external Venetian blinds as sun protection.
The roofs are reinforced concrete flat slabs and will be extensively planted.
Concerning energy, the new building falls approx. 25% below the requirements of the Energy Saving Regulation (EnEV 2009 / DIN V 18599). The building energy concept includes a district heating supply from Aquarado in Bad Krotzingen combined with managed overnight ventilation in the classrooms supported by decentralised ventilation equipment.
The vocational school is designed as a conventional reinforced concrete construction. Three PASCHAL formwork systems harmonise to give the building its shape and are speeding up the construction progress.
Quick construction
After a decision-making process taking years, construction needs to start and progress quickly to enable the education services for around 500 pupils to begin in September 2019.
Shortly after Implenia Bau GmbH from Rümmingen near Lörrach was awarded the contract worth EUR 3.6 million for the structural work, PASCHAL became involved in developing solutions for a wide range of reinforced concrete constructions.
The reinforced concrete shell of the vocational school in Bad Krotzingen was largely formed by Implenia BAU GmbH using PASCHAL'S LOGO.3, TTR Trapezoidal girder circular formwork and circular column formwork systems.
On the basis of the flexible LOGO.3 system, formwork specialists used the PASCHAL-Plan pro software to plan the formwork for wall, facade and column constructions.
The Stuttgart-based architecture firm, Aldinger Architekten Planungsgesellschaft mbH, had special requirements which needed to be incorporated with regard to the fair-faced concrete surfaces. According to the construction specification, the concrete walls and parapets on the visible sides are to be constructed using fair-faced concrete.
The architecture firms divided these into 3 fair-faced concrete classes:
S1 smooth surface, made using formwork with new plywood mounted.
S2 rough sawed surface with endless joints: made with LOGO.3, elements covered with rough sawn boards, specially pre-treated before concreting.
S3 regular formwork, production with formwork in rental-equipment standard.
The corresponding commissioning of the formwork and scaffolding systems for the individual fair-faced concrete surfaces of the inner and outer walls and the round and oval columns were planned, implemented and monitored by PASCHAL Logistics.
LOGO.3 was combined with TTR Trapezoidal girder circular formwork and circular formwork to create the smooth curves in the façade. The curves to be implemented were predefined for the "building corners" as well as the offset facade with a radius of 1.74 m from axis 5.1 to axis 6 and from axis B to C.
The many rounded reinforced concrete columns are being constructed from a combination of LOGO.3 and semi-circular prefabricated steel formwork. Most of the reinforced concrete columns, which are rounded on one side, serve to optically apportion the corridors according to the architectural concept while also accommodating projections and recesses for the classrooms. Some reinforced concrete columns, such as those in the stairwells, are rounded on both sides. For this purpose, LOGO.3 is combined on both sides with semi-circular PASCHAL prefabricated steel formwork.
Rapid construction progress
Implenia Bau GmbH is well on schedule despite the numerous detailed planning specifications and the foundation which needed to be protected from uplift by having the groundwater level lowered during shell construction up to completion of the 2nd upper floor. As a result, Implenia, in agreement with the client and the architecture firm, will hand over some sections to the other trades before the agreed completion date for the shell.
PASCHAL was largely responsible for the rapid progress of the shell construction work. This was helped by the preparatory work and on-time delivery of the formwork and scaffolding material, said Mario Bonnal, site manager at Implenia BAU GmbH.

The net floor area of the vocational school is 5,661 m², the gross floor area is estimated to be 6,819 m², and the enclosed space 26,746 m³. The basement was designed by Implenia as a waterproofed concrete tanking due to the maximum groundwater level being 7 cm above the upper edge of the basement floor. All surfaces in contact with the ground were packed with perimeter slab insulation to prevent heat loss.
Implenia Bau GmbH is using 4,100 m³ ready-mixed concrete to construct the reinforced concrete structures.
